The Volkswagon Golf (with the Rabbit nameplate in the U.S. before 1985 and between 2007 and 2009) is a well-known compact hatchback. In 2012, Volkswagon will release its most powerful Golf yet: the Golf R - in limited numbers, for a limited time.

Tuned by the in-house R team at Volkswagon, the Golf R promises to be more exciting than its already fun-to-drive predecessor. Unlike the Golf R32, which was powered by Volkswagon's popular VR6 engine, the new R is fitted by VW's ubiquitous turbocharged 2.0-L four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission. Power ratings for the U…

Volkswagen Goes For 170 MPG

Reaching for high miles per gallon is in no way a new trend. Back in 2002, Volkswagen designed a concept car that could go 100 kilometers on 1 liter of fuel, which is the equivalent of about 235 mpg. In 2010, Volkswagen shows off the second generation of their 1 liter concept, the L1. The German auto maker intends to have it in production by 2013.

Using a light and aerodynamic body design, along with diesel-electric parallel hybrid power train, the new L1 requires a max of 1.38 liters of diesel to cover 100 kilometers, or the equivalent of 170 miles to the gallon.
Volkswagen designers adapted a glider design to evolve the L1 concept, resulting in narrow body looks with two seats like a tandem, a single passenger is consigned to a rear seat. Access to the L1 is through a hinged canopy.

There is also a camera-based rearview OLEDs, offering a 180 degree view behind the car. Keeping with the high-tech cabin, the speedometer and other instruments are all virtual.

Although there is no stereo in the cabin on the concept, there are volume controls mounted to the steering wheel.

Volkswagen Golf blue-e-motion

VW is bringing new technology to the Los Angeles auto show, and some will have a chance to drive the German auto maker's upcoming Golf blue-e-motion, their all-electric variant of the Golf, which is due to launch in 2014.

The automaker states the Golf blue-e-motion's range is about 93 miles, but hopes to incrase that number by the time the model goes into production in 2013. With electric cars, range varies wildly and depends on driving style and how power-draining devices such as the heater and air-conditioner are used.

Journalists have been reading about Volkswagen's new blue-motion…

Volkswagen Up! Ready for 2012

World Car Fans is starting to learn new details about the 2012 Volkswagen Up! A recent report states the concept vehicle will be introduced as a production model during next year's Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.

Drawing inspiration from the concept (a vehicle that debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show) VW's production model will be a three-door hatchback with seating for up to four people. If that sounds a little bit small for your tastes, Up will eventually produce a sedan, five-door hatchback and even a MPV.

The three-door Up! is expected to hit European showrooms in late 2011, with possible American production coming further on. Base price of the car is approximately ?10,000 ($13,900 USD).  The e-Up will follow a year later, but pricing has yet to be released.
