Volkswagen Golf blue-e-motion

VW is bringing new technology to the Los Angeles auto show, and some will have a chance to drive the German auto maker's upcoming Golf blue-e-motion, their all-electric variant of the Golf, which is due to launch in 2014.

The automaker states the Golf blue-e-motion's range is about 93 miles, but hopes to incrase that number by the time the model goes into production in 2013. With electric cars, range varies wildly and depends on driving style and how power-draining devices such as the heater and air-conditioner are used.

Volkswagen Jetta Wins AJAC Award

It's been a great year for Volkswagen, and two of their new models have just received prestigious awards. The 2011 Jetta has been named "Best New Family Car" under $30,000 by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The all new VW Touareg has been named "Best new SUV/CUV" over $50,000.

Announcements were made in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where AJAC conducted their annual "test fest." This yearly event brings new cars destined for the Canadian marketplace, and allows journalists to compare them under various road and track conditions.

According to the press release, "Completely redesigned for 2011, the Jetta and Touareg are both significantly larger than the models they replace, and offer consumers a choice of various trims, and both gas and TDI Clean Diesel engines. Their combination of size and equipment make them compelling choices."

With a starting price of just $15,875, 2011's Jetta brings incredible value to the table. Standard features such as power windows and locks, ABS brakes, and Electronic Stability Control caught judges' attention. The updated Touareg, starting at $48,440, sets the standard in the luxury SUV class. An eight-speed transmission, coupled to our unique 4Motion all wheel drive system, ensures optimum road handling and traction under any conditions.

The Touareg and Jetta will be available at Volkswagen Dealers before the end of the year. Check back soon at Fletcher Jones Volkswagen - 1111 N Clark St., Chicago, IL 60610.

If that sounds a little bit small for your tastes, Up will eventually produce a sedan, five-door hatchback and even a MPV.

Power will likely be a provided by a wide variety of three-cylinder engines - including a 1.0-liter petrol, a 1.2-liter TSI with 84 horsepower, and a 1.2-liter diesel with 74 horsepower. As previewed by the e-Up concept, an electric-only version will also be available somewhere down the line.

The three-door Up! is expected to hit European showrooms in late 2011, with possible American production coming further on. Base price of the car is approximately ?10,000 ($13,900 USD).  The e-Up will follow a year later, but pricing has yet to be released.

Think of the VW CC-a reskinned Passat-as the workingman's CLS. It sure looks the part.

Alas, this is another comparo in which the car producing the least power and…
