Volkswagen Goes For 170 MPG

Reaching for high miles per gallon is in no way a new trend. Back in 2002, Volkswagen designed a concept car that could go 100 kilometers on 1 liter of fuel, which is the equivalent of about 235 mpg. In 2010, Volkswagen shows off the second generation of their 1 liter concept, the L1. The German auto maker intends to have it in production by 2013.

Using a light and aerodynamic body design, along with diesel-electric parallel hybrid power train, the new L1 requires a max of 1.38 liters of diesel to cover 100 kilometers, or the equivalent of 170 miles to the gallon.
Volkswagen designers adapted a glider design to evolve the L1 concept, resulting in narrow body looks with two seats like a tandem, a single passenger is consigned to a rear seat. Access to the L1 is through a hinged canopy.

There is also a camera-based rearview OLEDs, offering a 180 degree view behind the car. Keeping with the high-tech cabin, the speedometer and other instruments are all virtual.

Although there is no stereo in the cabin on the concept, there are volume controls mounted to the steering wheel.
